5 DAY KITCHEN

YEAR:Spring 2019

SIZE: 6′ x 3′ x 3′

MATERIAL:pine, butcher block, steel

This project is a small piece of a larger off-grid housing prototype currently in development. This kitchen is designed for use in a small home where connection to grid utilities is difficult or impossible. Much of the technical information used in the selection of appropriate equipment comes from sailboat and camper van suppliers. The goal is to make the assembly function as close as possible to a standard kitchen. With an aim to keep complexity and energy usage low, I focused on equipment that uses little or no electricity. With a 1 lb propane tank, a few 5 lb bags of ice, and a 10 gal water jug supplied, the kitchen can be in use for up to five days.

Making use of a rechargeable electric generator, standard faucet, propane cooktop, and ultra insulated cooler; the assembly provides all the needs of a full-featured kitchen. Designed as a unit for multiple different floor plans, the small footprint is designed for maximum efficiency with a minimum footprint. The kitchen is assembled with caster wheels and an oversize waterfall counter-top that conceals additional storage and room for bar seating if the unit is used as an island. There is also a standard outlet and USB charger concealed on the counter edge allowing for phone charging or operation of small appliances. The kitchen can be prefabricated off-site, easily transported, and moved in and around the the home to fit different needs.
