HARLEM MICRO

YEAR:Spring 2016

SIZE:270 SF

LOCATION:Harlem, NYC

This project took inspiration from the recent NYC micro apartment initiative. Although the concepts presented in the winning proposal are a step in the right direction, they fail to address the reality of existing housing in NYC. A large percentage of apartments in NYC already fall far under the minimum standards established by the contest guidelines, and they need a diverse set of creative solutions to work within existing building footprints. This project made use of compact, transformable furniture integrated into a “swiss army” wall that allows for maximized open floor space. Windows at both ends of the apartment further link the space and highlight the open floor-plan. The cramped bathroom was redesigned with compact fixtures and a threshold-free shower. Because of this efficient packing; a bed, couch, expanding table, closet, and full kitchen can all be included within a minimal footprint.
