This design and installation were inspired by modular shelving systems such as the 606 Shelving System by Vitsoe and other iconic pieces of mid-century design. In eastern Europe, this minimalist aesthetic was also paired with a simplicity of materials and construction that could be replicated easily and effectively by almost anyone.
This floating wall system has series of three unique components; wall brackets, four-foot shelves, and six-foot shelves. The brackets are secured to the wall, in a predetermined grid that allows for the shelves to be placed in a number of different arrangements. Once the brackets are in place, users pick their preferred arrangement, line up the notches on the shelf and bracket, and slide the shelf into place. The shelves are made with a Koskisen Plywood with a sprayed Formica veneer and they are attached to the wall with floating drywall anchors. With the anchors in place, each shelf can hold roughly 25 pounds per linear foot.
