NYC BATHROOM

YEAR:Fall 2012

SIZE:2128 SF

LOCATION:Manhattanville, NYC

New York City has an acute shortage of publicly available bathrooms. This project took a site along the Hudson River and envisioned a new public bathroom facility available to anyone frequenting Riverside Park. The structure itself is a gender neutral bathroom composed of individual locking toilet stalls united in front by a sink room that opens out towards the Hudson River. Wrapping the facility on the ground floor is a handicap accessible ramp that slowly brings the user down two feet to the bathroom level. The sidewalk and lawns of Riverside Park were pulled up and wrapped around the building to form a green roof and the original program was expanded to include a viewing platform wrapping around the top of the structure. The sidewalk ramped over the bathroom and created a new vantage position as a focal point of the project.
