SLUMP PENDANT

YEAR:Fall 2012

SIZE:30″ x 10″

MATERIAL:basswood, yarn

The ability to custom tailor objects for rapid production is explored in the design of the Slump pendant light. Our group created a system of parametric components that could be modified to create a custom lighting element. A programming script was created in Grasshopper that allowed us to quickly adjust several variables to radically change the shape and size of the digital model. The light itself is a long incandescent bulb surrounded by a system of woven thread suspended in rings. Adjustable components dictate the density of the weave; as well as the shape, size, number, and rotation of each ring.

After using the adjustable script to iterate many variations of the pendant light, we decided on a final form for fabrication. Templates generated from the digital model were sent to the laser cutter to fabricate the wood frames, and and the weaving assembly was assembled by hand using the digital model as a guide.
